Shimna College Students Take Part in Leadership Day at Finnebrogue

Student leaders from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle, County Down recently spent a day at Finnebrogue for a hands-on leadership training programme designed to build capability and confidence. The group was accompanied by Assistant Vice Principal Joanne Poland and Derek Bailey.

Led by members of the Finnebrogue team— including Kelly Grant and Sinead Morgan from HR and Paul Coey from IT —the sessions explored leadership styles, communication, teamwork, strategic thinking, SMART goal-setting, and the importance of relationships in effective leadership. The experience aimed to nurture not only school-based leadership but also essential life skills for future careers and personal development.

The day concluded with a lively debate led by Finnebrogue’s Head of Technical, Laura Robinson, on the question: Are leaders made, not born? Both sides presented compelling arguments, sparking thoughtful discussion and reflection. The group ultimately concluded that leaders are indeed made—each student a leader in the making with a clearer view of how to enhance their own leadership style.

Assistant Vice Principal Joanne Poland commented: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to grow in confidence and capability. The skills they’ve developed today will serve them in school, in future careers, and in life.”

Student leaders shared similar reflections on the day’s impact:

Head Boy Jude Brannigan said: “It was a brilliant experience that helped us understand what kind of leaders we want to be—not just in school, but in life.”

Head Girl Rachel Hodge added: “It was an eye-opening experience, and the training gave us practical tools and confidence to work better as a team.”
